Rizal and Art – José Rizal and the Rizal Wine from Noli Village

Magkaisa draws on its rich German-Filipino heritage of resilience, strength and dependability and is honored to provide insights of the relation between Germany and the Philippines during the time of the National Hero of the Philippines, Dr. José Rizal.

This time we take a closer look at Rizal's stay in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany in the year 1886 where he drank the German Wine – the Weissburgunder together with the catholic priest and the protestant pastor.

In the spring of 1886 Jose Rizal was in the ancient university town of Heidelberg and stayed in Wilhelmsfeld with Pastor Ullmer.  When meeting with the two representatives of the two religions, together they often drink the Weissburgunder the area was famous for. In remembrance of this occasion and the remembrance of Rizal in Wilhelmsfeld, in 2015 and 2020 the art collector and Rizalist Klaus W. Hartung sponsored twice the labels for the wine by having self taught artists to create those labels. The artists chosen with their artwork were in 2015 Oscar Ramos and in 2020 Dominic Urbano.

The third time the wine competition to find a artwork to be the label for the new Rizal Wine was traced to the latest Rizal Wine Label Art competition. The winner was chosen in January 2024. The winning label of the Rizal Wine of the latest edition of Rizal Wine was produced by John Paul Antido, the Rizal Wine from Noli Village is meanwhile labeled and can be ordered through Magkaisa Social Media contacts.
