Abstract Art by Mabini Artist: Rafael “Popoy” Cusi, Francisco “Paco” Gorospe, Roger san Miguel and Leonardo Zablan

Paco Gorospe was referred to as the “Picasso of the Philippines” due to the European influence in his paintings. “A Filipino legend in cubism and modern art from the Mabini School of Art; he was an internationally-acclaimed artist.”

This message overpowers the varied technical renditions, to wit, clearcut-blurred contours, sharp outlines and vigorous colors, and blurred contours seeming to submerge into the background or emerge from it.”

Mr. Cusi is all for a holistic approach to art – engaging your hands (skills), heart (values that nourish the soul), and mind (knowledge in relation to local and global issues).

“It is easy to paint but difficult to become an artist,” he maintains.

Leonardo Zablan specialized in “palette painting” (painting using palette knife).  His subjects included street scenes, still life, and portraits.  He also did “abstract” (non-figurative) paintings.  His works, like those of other deceased established Mabini Artists, were reportedly sold at very high prices or not sold at all.

Roger san Miguel

Roger San Miguel is characterized as a Figurative expressionist. He paints the human figure in curvilinear shapes and forms with earth color and hues that causes movement and life through progressive graphic shapes. Although he follows the Amorsolo tradition, his virtuousity of style swings him the other way into neo-expressionist works. Like all the conservatives, he gravitates towards the representational.
