Mabini Art Collection - Mother and Child by Master Paco Gorospe

Artworks by the same artist painting similar subjects – let us have a closer look at Mother and Child paintings. Paco Gorospe (1939 – 2002) was called “A Filipino legend in cubism and modern art from the Mabini School of Art; he was an internationally-acclaimed artist.”  

He was also referred to as the “Picasso of the Philippines” due to the European and American influences in his work.

Filipino people across the country—from Abra to Zamboanga—are depicted as children, youngsters and adults. They are depicted in single figure compositions or as a crowd—all of which portray facets of a rich and colorful Philippine culture.


Wide-eyed are the Muslim and Cordillera children, with innocence and inquiry all over their faces. With lips closed, they essay the general identity of their respective ethnic communities: composure developed at an early age ….


The generally (mis)understood matriarchal Philippines did not escape the observant eye of Gorospe. This is shown in the art pieces titled “Mother and Child” …. Essayed in various styles, the women nevertheless wrap their arms around their babies—typically Filipinos who consider every child as a gem or trophy.
