Collector's Choice

Sunday is Collector's Choice Day. This artwork Women with red flowers is a Masterpiece created by Mabini Master Francisco Paco Gorospe, the so-called Picasso of the Philippines. Each week we present online a special piece of Mabini Art, chosen by a private collector of Art of the Philippines.

For over 80 years now, Mabini Street, the two-kilometer street located in Ermita has been the nexus of touristy and artistic activities. In its heyday, it teemed with art galleries and shops, making it Manila’s most colorful alley.

More about the artwork A Filipino legend in cubism and modern art from the Mabini School of Art, Paco was an internationally-acclaimed artist.

He was also referred to as the “Picasso of the Philippines” due to the European and American influences in his work.

Paco’s contemporary, Roger San Miguel was quoted in the book “Revisiting Mabini Art” as a “spontaneous, dedicated fast learner, able to control his colors and break conventional norms. Back then the conventional style of painting landscapes and human interest subjects was the norm and the taste of the people leaned towards the traditional.  We experimented with exaggerated, distorted figures and disregarded proportions.”
