Collector's Choice

Today is Collector's Choice Day. This artwork is a Masterpiece done by the Mabini Master Francisco Paco Gorospe. Each week we do present online a special piece of Mabini Art, chosen by one private collector of Art of the Philippines.

Master Francisco Paco Gorospe  Fisherman, Oil on Canvas, 60 cm x 60 cm, Undated, Signed Lower LeftFor over 80 years now, Mabini Street, the two-kilometer street located in Ermita has been the nexus of touristy and artistic activities. In its heyday, it teemed with art galleries and shops, making it Manila’s most colorful alley.

More about the artwork Fish did not slither away from the grip of Gorospe. Regardless of the number of fishes in a work the series presented in two dominant styles: Kiukok’s angular cubism, and Elizalde Navarro’s colorism.Gorospe’s fishes belong to no particular species. …… Such renditions are come-ons for such species still to be discovered and fished out. But no matter, this does not detract from the fact that Filipinos are generally fisharians.(Quote of the text from the Book Revisiting ‘Mabini Art’, published in 2013, Germany, Printer´s Klaus W. Hartung - Consulting; Prof. Paul Blanco Zafaralla, PH.D.)
